Springboard: the secret history of the first real smartphone

A decade before Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, a tiny team of renegades imagined and tried to build the modern smartphone. Nearly forgotten by history, a little startup called Handspring tried to make the future before it was ready. This is the story of the Treo.

I story edited and managed the post production and distribution strategy. Springboard premiered at The Verge’s 10 year event in NYC in 2021 and on The Verge OTT app for Amazon Fire, Android TV, Roku, and Apple TV.

Lisa: Steve Jobs’ sabotage and Apple’s secret burial

Sabotage, hired goons, and a landfill in Utah: this is a story about the life, death, and afterlife of Apple’s most pioneering flop, the Lisa computer. How it inspired generations of computers to follow; how Steve Jobs championed it, then turned against it; and how an outsider gave it another chance…before Apple closed the door on the Lisa forever.

The idea for Apple’s secret burial came from a partnership with the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. Along with this full documentary, we published a shorter complementary video on the Lisa computer’s design, and several engaging videos on our social channels.

I was the only female executive producer (out of 9! sigh) and helped to pitch the show to Netflix, participate in the writers room, ensure reporting and research depth and accuracy, troubleshoot production and budget resources (during a pandemic), give edit notes, and devise an ambitious marketing promotion strategy that utilizes The Verge’s distinct reach.

I led the launch and branding strategy for Decoder after it took over from Kara Swisher’s Recode Decode feed. I hired and managed the producing team, guided the creation of our theme music, and gave early notes on interviewees, format, and publishing strategy. Later, I facilitated our ad read process with sales and editorial sponsorships, oversaw our live event strategy, navigated shifting personnel needs, and directed the launch of Decoder’s TikTok account. I also led growth discussions on a larger TV adaptation and other strategic partnerships for Decoder.

Why’d You Push That Button?

Why’d you like that celebrity photo on Instagram? Why’d you leave that restaurant review on Yelp? Why’d you text in lowercase, or turn on read receipts, or share your location? The Verge’s Ashley Carman and Kaitlyn Tiffany ask the hard, weird, and occasionally dumb questions about how your tiny tech decisions impact your social life.

Recording Police Brutality

As Black Lives Matter protests have spread across America, more and more people have begun sharing clips of police violence online. It’s not just happening at protests, either: sometimes police violence is captured in everyday life. On June 2nd, a traffic stop in Baytown, Texas turned violent when a couple friends began to question the arrest of a black man. One man recorded the clip and it went viral, but it didn’t end there. It set off a ripple effect across his life and the city of Baytown, Texas. What happens when someone uses technology to glare back at police interactions? For Isaiah Benavides, it may have put him in harm’s way.

EXPLAINER

Kimbal Musk’s Farm of the Future

The way we get our food in the United States is completely messed up. When you go to the grocery store, especially in a city, most of the fresh fruits and vegetables you see have been trucked in from somewhere else, losing crucial nutritional value at an environmental cost. This is a huge problem, but Elon Musk’s brother has a solution...in the form of a shipping container.

What the last Blockbuster has that Netflix doesn’t

I story edited, oversaw production, and led development of The Verge’s on camera reporting talent.

CREATORS

Beme News Update

Beme News was a grand experiment that brought together traditional journalists with creators to leverage CNN’s resources and create something new. As showrunner, and someone who had worked on both sides of the aisle, I was there to bridge the gap and guide the show from conception to delivery.

While our experiment didn’t last - and there are a myriad of reasons why - we had a ton of fun and it remains one of the wildest opportunities I’ve had to date.

SOCIAL

Short form vertical video is the dominant format at the moment. And TikTok has usurped YouTube as the top video search and news discovery platform. At the Verge we were strategic about which platforms we published certain videos on and why, but TikTok became the top priority to expand our brand and meet audiences where they are. The platform has been particularly huge for marketing podcasts.
